Tajikistan, officially the Republic of Tajikistan, is a landlocked mountainous country in Central Asia. It borders Afghanistan to the South, Uzbekistan to the West, Kyrgyzstan to the North, and China to the East. After the country had become independent, Tajikistan suffered from a devastating civil war which lasted from 1992 to 1997. Tajikistan has a population of 9,850,000 people. The main urban centres of today's Tajikistan include Dushanbe (the capital), Khujand, Kulob, Qurghonteppa, and Istaravshan. Tajikistan is a member of the Eurasian Patent Convention.
