Detailed information related to the European Patent.

In the United Kingdom, the validation and publication of European patents are streamlined due to the country’s participation in the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the London Agreement.

  • Translation

Validation request or translation of the patent specification is not required. Non-residents are considered to appoint a local agent for "Address for Service" for correspondence.

  • Representation by a patent attorney

No representation by a British registered attorney is required. However, foreign applicants are required to appoint a British local attorney as an "Address for Service" for receiving, interpreting, and handling any communication from the British Patent Office on behalf of the applicant.

  • Publication

Upon grant by the European Patent Office (EPO), the patent is published in the European Patent Bulletin. The UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) then records the patent in the UK national patent register. The details are also published in the official Patents Journal, which is issued weekly, typically on Wednesdays. This process ensures that validated patents become publicly accessible shortly after grant.

  • Maintenance fees

Annual fees are due each year starting from the 5th one and should be paid before the expiry of the last day of the month in which the anniversary of the filing date occurs. Annual fees should be paid within three months before or one month after the due date to avoid late payment fees. Late payment is possible within a six-month grace period by paying a corresponding surcharge.

  • Validation fees

The fees associated with validation of a European patent in the United Kingdom are available in the fee calculator.
