  • Multiple design application

Multiple design applications are possible in Singapore provided that the designs relate to the same class and subclass of the Locarno Classification or relate to the same set of articles.

  • Filing requirements of design application in Singapore

The official language of the industrial design prosecution before the Singaporean Intellectual Property Office is English.

For obtainment of a filing date, an industrial design application in Singapore should contain the following:
- name, nationality and address of the applicant;
- the title of the industrial design;
- indication of the class and sub-class of the Locarno International Classification;
- representation(s) of the design(s);
- the details of the priority, if any;
- payment of the prescribed fees.

Submission the Power of Attorney is not required for filing design applications in Singapore.

Submission of a certified copy of the Priority Document is required upon request of the Office. A certified or verified English translation thereof should also be submitted in case the Priority Document is not in English.

The deadline for filing an industrial design application claiming priority in Singapore is 6 months from the date of priority. The restoration of this term is not possible.

  • Examination of a design application in Singapore

The design application in Singapore undergoes formal examination only.

  • Novelty grace period

The novelty of the design is not disproved, if the information about the design was disclosed within 12 months before filing the application, or, if priority is claimed before the priority date by the following means:
- by the designer, or any successor in title of the designer;
- by a person other than the designer, or any successor in title of the designer, in consequence of information provided, or any other action taken, by the designer or any successor in title of the designer;
- as a consequence of an abuse in relation to the designer or any successor in title of the designer.

  • Grant, validity term and design renewal fees

No official grant fee is stipulated for industrial designs in Singapore. The validity term of an industrial design in Singapore is 5 years from the filing date. This term may be renewed four times up to a maximum of 25 years. An application for renewal must be filed during the last six months of a five-year registration period. Late payment is possible within a six-month grace period upon payment of a corresponding surcharge.

  • Duration of registration procedure

The average processing time for a design registration procedure in Singapore is 4-5 months in case of smooth procedure.

  • Representation by a patent attorney

Foreigners must perform the industrial design registration in Singapore through an agent, a Singaporean-registered patent attorney.
