Fine Print of Patent Costs Closer Look

When starting the patenting process for the first time, it may seem that a single payment to the Patent Office is all it takes.

However, one should be ready to pay for filing, examination, registration and possible replies to the Office Actions if there are flaws in the application.

All the nuances of calculating what’s needed to be paid are quite numerous. The filing fee is a fixed one but extras may be charged for:
- excess claims – for example, EPO charges extra for each claim over 15;
- each page over a particular number (thirty or sixty pages, for example);
- mandatory designation fee of Regional Patent Offices (ARIPO, EPO)
and the list can go on.

Luckily, the price can also decrease due to various reductions of fees available for small- or medium-sized entities, university or single inventors.

When filing abroad, keep in mind to look for an experienced patent attorney and translation of the application text, if needed.

Resuming all of the above, don’t fall for attractive low rates as you may end up paying much more than you could have if you got services tailored for your specific case.
