A substantial decrease in the IP related fees in Turkey

On September 5, 2018, the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology of Turkey announced amendment of the official fees associated with patents, utility models, designs and trademarks. The changes became effective on the same date, and concern the main procedural fees relating to filing, grant, registration of transfer of rights and maintenance.

The fees for filing and registration of all IP types have been decreased by an average of 22-25% and are currently as follows:

Filing:

·      patent and utility model filing fees – 35 TRY;

·      design filing fees – 130 TRY plus 60 TRY for each additional design indicated in the same application;

·      trademark filing fees for each class – 180 TRY;

Registration:

·      grant fees for patents and utility models – 265 TRY;

·      design publication fees – 35 TRY;

·      trademark grant fees – 495 TRY.

The fees for the registration of transfer of rights have been reduced by 25% for all IP types and now constitute 460 TRY.

Furthermore, the annuities for utility models have been reduced by 24-50%. The trademark renewal fees have also come down by about 25-33%. A corresponding decrease in design renewal fees is approximately 21-32%.

Such a considerable decrease in the official fees is explained by extreme currency fluctuation in Turkey. With the help of the listed reductions, the Turkish government is striving to support enterprises and entrepreneurs, promote the research activities and make the country more attractive for the IP filings.
