Laos and Afghanistan: changes in the trademark registration system

Laos

Multiple-class trademark applications are now available in Laos. On January 29, 2016, the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of Laos issued an Official Notice informing that as of February 1, 2016, Laos trademark applications may be filed in respect of several classes of goods and services of the International Classification. Said official Notice also stipulates the amount of the official fee for each additional class (800 000 Lao Kip or approx. 88 EUR). Basic fee for filing trademark application in one class remains unchanged (320 000 Lao Kip or approx. 35 EUR).

Afghanistan

With reference to the notification of the IP-Coster agent in the Afghanistan JAH & Co. IP, the Trademark Office of Afghanistan has changed trademark classification system. Filing a multiple-class application is not possible anymore; all trademark applications shall be filed according to the single class system.
