Multiple design applications
Multiple design applications (up to 100) are permitted in Ireland on condition that they are in the same class of the international design classification, this requirement does not apply to ornamentation.

Filing requirements of design application in Ireland
The official languages of an Irish design application are Irish or English.
An application must contain at least the following:
- request for registration of a design;
- applicant’s name and address;
- representation of the design;
- priority details(if any);
- payment of the filing fee.
A certified copy of the Priority Document should be submitted either at the time of filing or within three months from the date of filing.
The legalisation or notarization of the Power of Attorney is not required.
The term for filing a design application claiming conventional priority in Ireland is six months from the priority date. This term is non-extendable.

Examination of a design application in Ireland
A design application filed in the Irish Patent Office undergoes formal examination only. There is no need to request this examination.
The novelty grace period for an Irish industrial design application is 12 months from the date of disclosure, if any disclosure is made deriving from the designer.

Grant, validity term and maintenance/ design renewal fees
Upon granting, a design patent is valid for 5 years from the date of registration. No grant fee is stipulated. The 5-year term may be extended for four further periods of five years each if a request is provided and the corresponding fee is paid. A grace period of six months from the due date is also available.

Registration of a design application takes an average of 4 months depending on whether the design protection process is smooth.

Representation by a patent attorney
For foreign applicants, it is recommended to perform design prosecution in Ireland through an agent, a registered Irish patent attorney.
